Shabab Al Ahli’s New Era Under André Jardine Takes Shape

André Jardine’s first months at Shabab Al Ahli have already provided a clearer picture of what the Brazilian coach wants from one of the UAE’s most ambitious clubs.

When Jardine took charge in the summer, the immediate question was how quickly he could translate a positive pre-season into competitive performances.

The early response has been encouraging.

Shabab Al Ahli opened their 2026–27 ADNOC Pro League campaign with a 5–1 away victory over Khorfakkan, turning a difficult first half into a dominant second-half performance.

That result has since been followed by further domestic progress and a winning start in the AFC Champions League Elite.

Five Second-Half Goals Transform the Khorfakkan Opener

Shabab Al Ahli did not have the comfortable opening to the season that the final score might suggest.

Aylton Boa Morte put Khorfakkan ahead after 25 minutes at Saqr Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi Stadium, and the hosts protected that advantage until half-time.

Jardine changed the shape of the contest after the break.

Sardar Azmoun was introduced, and Shabab Al Ahli began playing with greater control and attacking threat. Saeid Ezatolahi equalised in the 57th minute before converting a penalty to put the visitors ahead.

Once Shabab Al Ahli had the lead, the game opened dramatically.

Yuri César made it 3–1, Azmoun added a fourth and Rikelme completed the scoring in stoppage time.

A 1–0 half-time deficit had become a 5–1 victory.

The response was significant not simply because of the scoreline but because of how many different players contributed after the interval.

Jardine Has Options Across the Attack

Jardine arrived with a squad containing several different attacking profiles.

Yuri César offers direct running and creativity, while Azmoun provides a more natural reference point through the centre. Players such as Guilherme Bala, Mateusão and Rikelme give the coach additional ways to alter the attacking structure during a match.

That depth was evident against Khorfakkan.

Jardine did not need the starting XI to solve every problem. Changes from the bench altered the contest, and the team became increasingly dangerous as the second half developed.

The coach later highlighted the importance of adaptability as his players became more familiar with his approach.

That flexibility is particularly valuable for a club competing across several competitions.

From Domestic Football to the AFC Champions League Elite

The scale of Shabab Al Ahli’s ambitions extends beyond the ADNOC Pro League.

The club entered the 2026–27 AFC Champions League Elite after reaching the semi-finals of the previous edition, and the experience of that run has raised expectations around the team’s continental potential.

Their new campaign began at Rashid Stadium against Tractor of Iran.

Yuri César’s first-half goal was enough for a 1–0 victory, giving Jardine three points from his first AFC Champions League Elite league-stage match with the club.

The performance was not flawless, and Jardine himself acknowledged mixed feelings afterwards, but collecting a win while still refining the team is a useful position for a new coaching project.

The result also strengthened the early UAE showing in an expanded competition where Al Ain, Shabab Al Ahli and Al Wasl form the country’s league-stage contingent.

The First League Defeat Added Another Test

The opening weeks have not been entirely straightforward.

After beginning the league campaign with three successive victories, Shabab Al Ahli suffered a 3–1 home defeat to Al Jazira.

The match was another reminder that a strong start under a new coach does not remove the competitiveness of the domestic league.

Shabab Al Ahli scored inside the opening two minutes through Guilherme, but Al Jazira responded before half-time and took control after the interval.

For Jardine, such matches provide a different kind of information from comfortable wins.

A new system is tested most clearly when the team loses control of a game, has to respond to an opponent’s adjustment or cannot rely on momentum.

Tactical Development Remains Central

Jardine has spoken about creating a team able to adapt rather than relying on a single fixed formula.

That approach makes sense given Shabab Al Ahli’s schedule.

Domestic opponents can demand one type of football, while AFC Champions League Elite matches against leading Asian sides can present completely different tactical problems.

Squad rotation will also become increasingly important as fixtures accumulate.

The opening victory at Khorfakkan showed how much attacking quality Shabab Al Ahli can produce when a match opens up. The narrower continental win over Tractor required greater patience and control.

Those are different tests, and Jardine will need his team to handle both repeatedly.

Expectations at Shabab Al Ahli Remain High

Jardine did not arrive at a club interested in a long rebuilding process without immediate pressure.

Shabab Al Ahli expect to compete for domestic trophies and remain relevant deep into Asian competition.

That makes the opening months important, but not decisive.

The 5–1 comeback against Khorfakkan demonstrated the squad’s attacking potential. The early league victories created momentum. The defeat to Al Jazira exposed areas still requiring work, while the win over Tractor gave the new coach a positive start on the continental stage.

The new era is already producing evidence of what Shabab Al Ahli could become under Jardine, but the season will be defined by whether that quality can be maintained across several competitions rather than by one spectacular opening result.
